




For the past couple of years I have been dabbling in Mid-Century Design. it's true, I don't love every tiny little aspect of it, but I do love bits and parts of it and believe that if it is your thing, some of it mixed into your interior design can be incredibly attractive. I for one incorporated it by using bigger pieces and then accessorizing around them. For instance, in my living room, I use a vintage Mid Century Long Low Slung Dresser for my TV stand, my couch (while not vintage) uses modern straight lines, and my side chair is vintage Mid Century. ( Let it just be said here that surprisingly enough, I will rarely if ever sacrifice comfort for design. I love design, but I have to be able to use it-and want to use it. I believe that things can be both form beautiful and functional.) Also in the bedroom, Jeff and I use a two dresser and headboard set that are vintage Mid Century inherited. Now...other than these larger, main pieces, I accessorize with with modern pieces. Lets face it, I may love the bones of this design era (I have always been one for straight modern lines and clean set ups) but I don't actually want to look like I am living in a Mid Century Ranch Home. I am not trying to re create a theater set for the 1950's-60's.
Now being interested as I am in this era of design, and also having a deep appreciation for good photography (esp that focusing on Los Angeles-My true home and love) I absolutely cannot wait to see the documentary that recently came out on DVD, Visual Acoustics . (If you have not already, this link says, "Watch me I am beautiful!") It focuses on Julius Shulman, a remarkable photographer who helped to spread Californian Modernism and expose the likes of Koenig, Wright, Eames, and Neutra. Quite seriously, his photos make me drool for California lol. I am so in love with them right now that I am thinking of incorporating them into an art series that I want to begin working on. Don't you just love being ridiculously inspired? Now if only I had some huge canvas's to being working on....
